DTF Gang Sheet File Preparation Guide: How to Set Up Your Artwork for Perfect Prints

DTF Gang Sheet File Preparation Guide

Getting your artwork files right before you upload is the single biggest factor in print quality. This guide walks you through every step of preparing your files for our Custom DTF Gang Sheets — $1.75 Per Sq Ft so your prints come out sharp, vibrant, and exactly the way you designed them.

1. Accepted File Formats

For the best results, submit files in one of the following formats:

  • PNG — Strongly preferred. Supports transparent backgrounds, lossless quality, and is ideal for all DTF artwork.
  • PDF — Acceptable for vector-based artwork. Ensure all fonts are embedded or outlined and that transparency is preserved.
  • Avoid: JPEG/JPG files. JPEG compression destroys fine edges and eliminates transparency, both of which are critical for DTF printing.

2. Resolution: 300 PPI at Final Print Size

Your file must be 300 pixels per inch (PPI) measured at the size you want it printed — not the size of your canvas.

Here's how to calculate it:

  • If your design will print at 10 inches wide, your file must be at least 3,000 pixels wide (10 × 300 = 3,000 px).
  • If your design will print at 4 × 4 inches, your file must be at least 1,200 × 1,200 pixels.

Upscaling a low-resolution file does not add detail — it only makes pixels larger. Always start from a high-resolution source.

3. Transparent Backgrounds

DTF transfers are applied directly to fabric, so your design must have a fully transparent background — no white fill, no color fill, no shadow layer behind the artwork.

How to check:

  • In Photoshop or Procreate, turn off all background layers. You should see a grey-and-white checkerboard pattern where there is no artwork.
  • Save as PNG (not JPEG) to preserve that transparency.
  • If you're working in Illustrator, make sure there is no white rectangle behind your artwork before exporting.

A white background on your file will print as a solid white rectangle on the transfer.

4. Exact Dimensions

Build your canvas to the exact finished print dimensions you need. Our gang sheets are priced by square footage, so every inch of space matters.

  • Set your document dimensions in inches (not centimeters or pixels) when possible, then set resolution to 300 PPI.
  • Double-check width and height before exporting — scaling after the fact reduces quality.
  • If you are nesting multiple designs into a single gang sheet file yourself, verify the total canvas size matches the sheet dimensions you're ordering.

5. Spacing for Repeated Designs

When placing multiple copies of a design on a single gang sheet, leave adequate spacing between each copy to allow for clean cutting without clipping artwork:

  • Minimum recommended spacing: 0.25 inches between each design (approximately 75 pixels at 300 PPI).
  • Do not let design edges touch or overlap — the cutting margin must be clear.
  • Maintain consistent spacing throughout the sheet for efficient cutting.

6. Embedded Fonts

If your design contains text, always outline or rasterize your fonts before saving. This prevents font substitution if the receiving system does not have your font installed.

  • In Adobe Illustrator: Select all text → Type → Create Outlines.
  • In Adobe Photoshop: Right-click the text layer → Rasterize Type.
  • In Affinity Designer: Select text → Layer → Convert to Curves.
  • For PDFs, choose "Embed All Fonts" in your export settings.

Outlined text cannot be edited, so always keep a copy of your original working file.

7. Pre-Upload Checklist

Before you upload your file to your Custom DTF Gang Sheet order, run through this quick checklist:

  • ☐ File format is PNG or PDF (not JPEG)
  • ☐ Resolution is 300 PPI at final print size
  • ☐ Background is fully transparent (checkerboard visible in editing software)
  • ☐ Canvas dimensions match intended print size
  • ☐ All designs have at least 0.25" spacing between them [confirm spacing with your workflow]
  • ☐ All fonts are outlined or rasterized
  • ☐ File has been proofed at 100% zoom for pixelation or edge artifacts
  • ☐ No unwanted white or colored background layers hidden behind artwork
